There are two things you need to pay attention to when you’re talking about New Orleans music. There’s the tradition. And there are the players. By traditions, we’re talking about jazz, R&B, hip-hop, zydeco, Cajun, funk, Latin, and so on. The players come from the tradition, and they hop around, mixing a little of this and a little of that to move the whole thing forward. Think of how it was – Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson, Buddy Bolden, Ernie K-Doe. Now think about how it is – Irma Thomas, Allen Toussaint, Fats Domino, Kermit Ruffins, Irvin Mayfield, Branford Marsalis. The tradition just keeps playing on.
